Helping each other out: Strangers get a photo for a new friend they just met in the crowd.
Getting it done:
I complained to the inauguration committee when we got only one press pass, and somehow that put my name on the list. When they called the night before to say we got the pass, it was too late for a Secret Service background check on anybody else. So, I was it. Saturday morning I grabbed my camera and notebook and headed into the bitter cold to get through the security search and work the crowd while Chief Photographer Kristine Buls worked the press gallery. Fourteen hours later, I had some great and not so great shots, video and good local quotes for Web and print. And I got a foundation for the column above. Any editor in chief in any medium who can't step up and produce is no longer a journalist. Anyone who is not a journalist should not try to be an editor. Zoom in on the poster.
